About Us

Our Mission

We aim to enrich the lives of those in our community, encourage lifelong learning, and develop creative expression.

Old Rockville cultural center provides a unique experience that expands community engagement and fosters an appreciation for the arts and our shared history.

We seek to find and tell our community’s stories through art, performances, exhibits, events, and historical education.

Our Leadership

The Old Rockville Board of Directors is composed of local, engaged individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and experience – the arts, finance, project management, community service, and more – coming together for one purpose: to bring an art and cultural center to Old Rockville.

With the completion of Old Rockville’s current exhibits, we look forward to realizing the next phase of exhibits.

While each Board member has a different talent set, we are unanimous in the belief that local places for the arts need to be preserved, nurtured, and expanded. By doing so, we improve ourselves and enrich our community.

We remain steadfast in our mission to provide a unique cultural experience within Orange County at Old Rockville.

Our Founder

Old Rockville was founded by Harold Card, an extraordinarily creative person, successful businessman, world-renowned motivational expert, founder of the local Historical Association, and eminent citizen of our community.

Harold Card and his wife, Kathleen, purchased the historic home at Old Rockville in 1961.

As an artist himself, Card has created thousands of paintings and sculptures. The multiple rooms in the historic home burst with art, in a variety of styles, techniques, and subjects. Each tells a story, and when given the chance, Card will share a bit of that story, always with a grin and a twinkle in his eye.

In 2021, Harold Card donated his family home of 60 years to establish Old Rockville cultural center.

Our History

A property rich in history, the original house at Old Rockville was built in the late 1700s.

The House was expanded in 1803 by Vincent Clark, who moved from Long Island to the 163-acre farm. Here, Clark opened one of the first licensed inns in the town in 1824. A tavern in the house served as a stage coach stop from Middletown to Bloomingburg.

In 1840, Old Rockville was purchased by Timothy Horton who expanded and converted the estate into a dairy farm, constructed outbuildings, and updated the house to a more modern architectural style. In 1854 Horton’s younger brother, James, converted the dairy farm to include an ice creamery. By the 1920s, the Horton Ice Cream Company emerged as the largest ice cream maker in the world.
